Coach Bill was my first real friend When I moved to Vero Beach in 2018 after getting married. I knew no one and was feeling very alone. I applied to his job posting for assistant coach/swim instructor position on Bolt Aquatics. After coaching water polo and teaching swim lessons my entire life I knew it would be perfect for me to get in bed in the community. I met Bill and we instantly clicked. He was so easy to be around and work with. I genuinely looked forward to going to the pool everyday and being with my friend. It was inspiring to work along side such an amazing coach. Seeing the kids not only love him but respect him. Even the kids who kept getting disciplined over and over and over kept coming back. Everyone knew they needed Bill. He was excited for me as I got pregnant and started a family. Continuing to support me and understand as I had to slowly stay home more. I’m so glad my little baby Colton got to meet him and swim with him a little bit. I will never forget those 2.5 years with bill. His advice and wisdom is unwavering. His skill as a Coach is unmatched. His friendship was unwavering. His legacy will live on.

Coach Bill will always be very special to our family. Our daughter, Naomi, did swimming with him for a couple of years and he was one of the first people to really get through to her. Naomi has autism and so many people blew us off and didn’t want to work with her, but not Coach Bill. He knew just how to talk her and helped her to reach some pretty awesome milestones. We’ve missed swimming with him since we moved and are deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Coach Bill touched so many lives and he will be greatly missed.

your rested now, in the place you loved most. we said goodbye to you for the last time on Saturday, which is definitely the hardest thing i’ve had to do in awhile. watching you drift away into the currents, riding that never ending wave. at peace and rest with all your loved ones surrounding you. your family did a beautiful job on your memorial and they tried their hardest to make it a celebration but we all broke as we linked arms in a circle and said our last words. we will miss you and your wonderful smile, your jokes, your lunatic driving skills, your coaching and your voice. so many people loved and cherished you just for simply being you. i’ll miss getting random text from you asking about how my family and i are doing. i’ll miss walking onto deck and having conversations with you while i helped train your little kids and how you always used me as an example to encourage the young swimmers to keep going. i’ll never forgot the look on your face when i could get your most difficult kid to start swimming and how you didn’t understand how i did it but you were happy someone did it. i hope your resting easy and riding the craziest waves you dreamed about while you soak in all the suns rays. please keep looking down on us with those crystal clear blue eyes of yours. i’ll love you forever.
“And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. – Luke 23:43”

We continue to miss Bill every day. We told the kids before their swim meet today that they should dedicate their performance today to Coach Bill. After the meet we noticed Ryan (8yrs) wrote “Bolt” on his arm next to his events. He said, “I did it for Coach Bill”.

I find it difficult to share emotions. So instead I will attempt to tell you how I felt about my friend, Will, aka "UB", this way. To me the majority of people that enter my life are akin to a pebble thrown into still water, the ripples touch me but those ripples soon still. UB was a huge boulder hitting those same waters creating a tsunami of joy, laughter, amazement and sometimes pure bewilderment. But he was a tsunami nonetheless, one that imparted pure love. Love you instinctively knew came from his soul. After meeting all of his family I see that they are all made from the same precious cloth as Will. I will miss him and his wondrous family I believe for the rest of my life. I have been blessed and honored to have had the experience of their friendship. Bolton family, Skudin family, and of course his beautiful Hawaiian family. "Yeah Baby!"....Love always, miss forever Mae Anderson

My brother Brett introduced us to Billy 25 years ago. They were the best of friends living in New York City together. Billy was a giant of a human spirit. He lit up a room with his presence. He was beyond special to our entire family. . We were privileged to have him join our Christmas Eve table at the 21 club for over 20 years. This Christmas tradition will never be forgotten!! There is a part of him that will live on in each of us in the future. His energy, big hearty laugh, and giant hugs were addictive. We will miss him dearly!!

Billy was one of a kind and always the "Life of the Party". I have fond memories of him (and some pretty funny stories). I attached some photos of Billy at my wedding, where he put his tie on me, then tied it around my eyes and threw me over his shoulder. I followed him on Facebook and Bolt Aquatics and it was evident that he was so happy fulfilling his passion, which he did in such a positive, loving and generous way. He had the ability to put a smile on the face of anyone he met. He will be missed by so many.

We live in Houston full time, but her July’s spent surfing with Coach were her year round favorite times. She’s now 7. We are honored to have attended the paddle out, and that Ella got to go out into the circle.
She wrote this “ my Coach that tot [taught] me to surf has past away. I hope he is okay! I LOVE YOU COACH!”

I write this email unsure of the memories I should share when one considers that Billy has been my dear friend since I was 2 days old. Our mothers were friends and delivered us at the same hospital.
A swim team memory from when we were just 8 years old and he swam with such strength and determination? Or a memory of the countless rainy days we passed at the South Shore Yacht Club reading “Archie” comic books?
Or any one of the hundreds of other fun memories that children share of mischief and laughs with our parents just far enough away for our antics to be carried out?
Or the “Pool Show” nights we all eagerly waited for where his whole family got us all involved in good family fun each summer?
Swimmer Award nights when trophies were given and Billy always had the top awards for being the champion swimmer that he was?
Or when we were both in my brother, Christopher’s wedding and I was happy to finally “walk down the aisle” with him as I told him. He knew my childhood crush on him would never subside. Even with our spouses watching.
Our friendship was one that should’ve lasted for so many more years because we weren’t done sharing and laughing as we had always done.
I look forward to his memorial and seeing so many others who miss him as I do.
Love,
Jackie (Gentry) Le Coche

As a master swimmer, Bill allowed me to join the kids' team and train with them on a couple of occasions. Also, on my walks to the beach, I used to see him coaching kids how to surf and spend hours punching little souls on the waves. It was fantastic to see his endurance in the water and how happy he made those kids.
Kind regards to his family,

I only had the opportunity to meet Uncle Bill just one time, but it was memorable, to say the least.
Uncle Bill was visiting New York a couple of summers back, and one afternoon his nephew Will invited my son Will Jr. and I to sneak off with the two of them to go surf for a while at an out of the way location. For that one afternoon we talked and laughed and surfed as “The Four Wills”. And while the surf was fun, it was even more fun to listen to Uncle Bill and get to know him. When the four of us weren’t talking together as a group, Uncle Bill found time to talk to both me and my son alone on that beautiful, sunny summer afternoon and find out about us, and we each learned about him – the quality of man, the humor, his love of life, his pride in family, and the genuine joy he had in meeting new people.
I won’t go in to all the things we talked about that afternoon, but suffice to say he left an indelible mark on both me and my son, so it’s not surprising at all to hear and read about the mark he has left on so many others.
God bless you, Uncle Bill, I'm glad I got to know you even for a day. Rest in peace, and God willing, we shall meet again one day.

I moved down to Florida three years ago and my mom told me to call one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. She swam with his sister Beth. Coach Bill was such a great coach and mentor to our son, Jake. God placed him in our lives at a critical time. He helped Jake build so much self esteem and bravery. We are very thankful to have known him for as long as we did. He will be missed greatly by our family.
Jake was very overwhelmed at his first swim meet and was scared to get in the water. Coach Bill being who he is jumped into the water with him. Video below.
Here are some other videos I have of coach Bill.

Words cannot begin to express how heartbroken we are about the loss of our dear friend/Uncle. My kids don’t know their life without Billy. I don’t know anyone who had a bigger heart than Billy. He was joy, laughter, kindness, a good friend and a sweet Uncle who was a great listener and always had good advice and love to give. Billy was an integral part of our family and the magnitude of his loss will be felt forever. We have incredible memories that we will always cherish. Our condolences to the Bolton and Skudin families. Heaven gained one of the good ones.

Bill coached my son Alex for about 4 years. It was such an amazing team to be a part of. He was not only a coach but became an amazing friend and mentor to Alex and a great friend to our family. Even after we left the "Bolt" family Bill always kept up with us and how Alex was doing. He helped him get a job lifeguarding and he always called Alex when he needed a lifeguard for camp. He had a way to make a person feel like they were the most special person in the world. Bill also taught my daughter Natalia how to surf. She enjoyed surf camp more than any other camp and always looked forward surfing with coach. She can be very shy but Bill just didn't accept that. He always could get her talking to him and get a smile or giggle from her. I don't know how to put into words how much I enjoyed having Bill in our lives. He will be forever loved and we will always miss him!

When I meet Coach Bill, my niece and Nephew were just placed with me after their mother passed away. I was looking for someone to be their mentor and a place for where they could channel their thoughts and emotions while having the love and support of the team that I couldn’t give them. When Coach Bill heard the kids story he immediately took us In like we were family and loved James and Starr just as much as the rest of the swim family. We are forever grateful for having Coach Bill in our lives and will miss him very much.

My husband, Rick and I first met Bill years ago. We wanted our daughter, Reese (now 11) to be able to continue to work on her swim technique during the summers when we were in Vero. Hailing from NYC, we quickly became friends with Bill given our common connection. He would call me the Sicilian Tiger Mom. Reese would swim with Bill’s team, Bolt Aquatics in the summers and would also work with him privately several times a week. Her strokes improved tremendously and we would see her times drop drastically come that first meet in NY in the Fall. Our friendship with Bill never ended on Labor Days though- we always kept in touch during the school years via phone and text. When covid hit NY in March of 2020, we moved to Vero for close to a year. We spent 6 days out of the week with Bill between surfing, swim team and private swim lessons for Reese and her little brother, Ryan. If I was sending the kids with an Italian sandwich- I packed one for Bill because he always appreciated good food.
We were sad to leave this past summer. We had him over for dinner right before we left and had such a nice time sharing stories with him. We left for NY a few days later, but as we did every time we left, we always kept in touch with Bill. My last text with him a few weeks before he passed. Reese was in a swim meet and Bill was watching it live on YouTube. He was watching and was so into it like any proud coach would be. And, he was watching Ryan too who wouldn’t have made the swim team in NY had it not been for working with Bill almost every day this past summer. To say that there is a hole in our hearts would be an understatement. He has left an indelible mark on the Romolo family.

circa 1980 Bill took a job as a boat salesman at AMFAC marine in Honolulu. New turf, that first big sale was elusive. We phone-talked often in the slow hours, I at my bank desk job across town. Bill gave updates on a certain wandering guy who'd drop in and ogle over a small 12' skiff and would orate on how he would convert it to a real home, install a cutty and berth, coleman stove, etc. (no mention of a Head), and Bill gave him all ears and encouraged that dream, and often gave him lunch. Bill called him "The Boat Doctor". I'm certain if Bill had the means he would have purchased that boat for him and set up shop to get that conversion done, one more dream served. Within a couple of months, Bill did close a sale on a sizeable yacht, earned an eye-popping commission, squared up his ledgers, and also put us at the local "Hawaii Islanders" minor league baseball game where Bill ensured lots of local kids had caps, bats, banners and snacks. From our 3rd baseline seats and the throng Bill had built, that single-A game had the electricity of a World Series. Indelible. Aloha Bolt.

Hi
Just a few things that we are grateful for having Coach Bill as a coach for our girls
We are thankful that we are apart of such an amazing swim team and that the girls were able to learn so much from Coach Bill
He was always so encouraging to the girls and their self confidence showed from it. I wish I had more pictures of him with the girls.
We will always remember how proud of the girls he was, how he always said they were so athletically built, how he called to talk to Camille before a meet to give her a pep talk, how he used to call Claire Clara and when we asked her why she didn’t correct him, she said “I kinda like it”

We knew Coach Bill briefly while in Vero Beach, but your memory and impact will last forever.

Below was on the Bolt Aquatics Facebook page, when we moved back to Atlanta in June. Coach Bill sure loved kids!

A Coach Bill only comes along once in a lifetime. Bill was a true rockstar….he was the best swim coach I’ve seen. He truly loved each and every child he coached and was the only coach I ever saw to be the first to jump in the pool with the kids. He always wanted to be right there with them- on their level. He taught my two oldest boys, Paul and Carmine to swim competitively and they loved every minute of it. Not only an amazing coach, he was a gem of a person and a great friend. Even after moving away from Florida Bill stayed in touch and was always so excited to see swim updates from the boys. His absence will leave a hole in the swim and surf community in Vero Beach; but more so in the hearts of those that loved him. Rest Easy Coach Bill. You will never be forgotten by our family nor the entire Bolt Aquatic’s family and beyond.

Coach Bill, you were a once in a lifetime coach! Your love for swimming and surfing always shined through when teaching, and your nurturing demeanor with strict “follow the rules” protocols is undoubtedly a hard act to follow. My children learned the correct swimming techniques which is a lifelong skill. We will miss Coach Bill immensely, but will continue his memory by continuing to swim in his honor. RIP Coach Bill and thank you for impacting and teaching so many on the water.

It has been hard to find the words even this many days later. Our daughter Aniela started swimming with him at the age of 6. He taught her and Liam to surf. They practically spent an entire summer on the beach with him surfing when Covid happened. We are so thankful for those precious times with him. I have never known a more giving, loving, larger than life human than Coach Bill. He loved our kids, taught them swim and life lessons. He reminds us to live each day to the fullest and will forever be in our hearts.

i could write a never ending book of what a great man coach bill was and how he’s forever changed my life and will forever leave a special place in my heart. coach bill came into my life when i was a short, tan 6 year old girl who was missing her two front teeth, coach saw me and immediately thought of nicknaming me monkey which stuck with me since that day and will forever stick with me. Coach bill saw the talent i had for swimming the second i started my weekly swim lessons with him so he inspired me to continue onto his swim team which was probably the best decision i could’ve ever made because that’s what got me here today, still going strong in the same sport 10 years later. Bill never once doubted me even through all the tears i shed, and through all the injuries that i had stumbled upon. I will always remember all the times we would race in the pool and you always out touched me which made me work even harder just so i could beat you and rub it in your face and trust me i still remember the day i beat you in our little race. I won’t ever forget the 200 fly you made me do after practice as a punishment, and when i say i’ll never forget that i won’t. I will forever cherish all the pictures we have together and all the stories behind the pictures. Thank you for helping me grow into the young women and swimmer i am today and being such a big part of my childhood and teen years. I couldn’t begin to thank you enough for always being there for me and always listening to me when i told you about all my stupid mistakes i started to make in life. I will always be thankful for all the conversation we had about life, ourselves, our strengths and weaknesses, what we had in common, the sky, the beach, how much you hated breaststroke and so much more. I catch myself thinking of you after i watch the sun rise and the sun set because i knew how much you admired them and how we both would catch ourselves rambling about how beautiful the sky is. Sometimes i think you paint the sky vibrant color for me as a reminder that your watching over me and to keep going in life because you knew how much i was struggling. I will forever think of you after each wave i catch on my board, and after each breath i take between strokes. I will always look for the fish when i take a breath in freestyle. I promise i will keep swimming even when things get hard and i get in the mindset of quitting because as you said “monkeys don’t quit they fight.” Thank you for the incredible 9 years we had together and for all the memories we created. Please rest easy you deserve it.
Much love, Monkey girl (Amy Arriagada)

Bill touched so many lives. My kids loved him as a mentor and as a coach and I loved him for loving my kids. When my oldest son got in trouble Bill was the first to reach out and offer help. When my middle son had a "Dads and Doughnuts" day at school he was upset because his dad lives abroad. I'm a single mom. Gregory invited Bill and Bill jumped at the chance. Gregory was so proud to host his coach. Bill sent me a picture of them together. When my daughter got caught in a rip current, before I even realized it Bill ran up, grabbed his board, paddled to her and brought her to safety. I owe him her life and so much more. As I am writing this, tears are just rolling out of my eyes. There will never be another Bill Bolton because when G-d made him he broke the mold. May his memory be a blessing.

My deepest condolences to Bills family and friends, he was truly one of the most amazing men I have known! So many memories, I wouldn't know where to start! Bill was life changing not only for my daughter Mya, but also for me! He was able to take a child with high sensory disorder and anxiety, and help her turn into a confident little mermaid! He came into our life when she absolutely needed him the most! Spending time with Bill was such a huge turning point for her that I am forever grateful! Thank you Bill for coming over and loving my hamburger helper, tacos and all the other dinners that I attempted to make. Thank you for spending some holidays with us, and filling our home with laughter! Thank you for being Mya's Godfather! I know you will always look out for her and keep her safe! I never realized until now, that literally every person you met, you had a special connection with and just made such an amazing impact. Every person has an amazing Bill story! We all thank you for that! My heart hurts when I think about all the kids and parents that you never got to meet yet! You always told me, "as long as you had a full tank of gas and $10 dollars in your pocket you were a happy man!" Such a good thing, because you were never going to organize your book keeping, LOL. I see little signs that I know you are sending us, so thank you! We love you so much, until we meet again!

I go back to the ‘80s with Bill when he first came back from Hawaii and got a job at Garban . Bill sat next to me and I trained him . He was the most loyal kind friend I could ever imagine. I still work at the firm and would talk to Bill often . On 9./11 I was in WTC Tower 2 . That day Bill left the most emotional beautiful message on my answering machine not knowing my fate . He checked in with me each Sept. 11th since then . I feel so blessed to have had Bill as a friend for over thirty five years . I will miss him terribly.
We last spoke November 5th
God Bless Bill
